Paul Barker (PCV Iran 1971-76)
Please join us for a special talk by Paul Barker (PCV Iran 1971-76), longtime WCPCA member and editor of the Peace Corps Association Iran's Advocacy Newsletter. Paul recently penned the lead article in the March edition of the newsletter entitled, The Bombing of 'Half the World' and in the April edtion entitled, No One Can ‘Win’, but Donald J. Trump Must Lose This War. He will share his thoughts on the current state of the war and what he and his fellow Iranian PCVs are doing to try to stop it.
As he writes in the article: As Peace Corps Volunteers in Iran between 1962 and 1976 we came to appreciate the richness of Iran’s architectural heritage as well as the beauty of its poetry and the gentle kindness of its people. It is with overwhelming sadness that we now bear daily witness to the unfolding horror of the war which engulfs countries between Iran and Israel. (More from his recent podcast.)
The talk is open to WCPCA members and friends and family. It will be held at the Yamada Language Center, 175 McKenzie Hall, University of Oregon (1101 Kincaid St, Eugene, OR 97403). 1:00-2:30 p.m. Attendees are invited to bring a snack to share. Contact us for more details.
(from the cover) "Raven Moore's 2 years of living in Cote d'Ivoire, West Africa as a Peace Corps Volunteer makes you fall in love with this story and laugh out loud when you least expect it. How do Ivoiriens define color, class, gender, sexuality, religion, and more, differently than you or I do? "Padre!" will enthrall you, surprise you, entertain you, and give you a profound, new view of the world that will help you to navigate it better at any level." 3:30-5:00, Contact Patty MacAfee for location and more information; see Aug. 2025 newsletter for this year's readings.
Please join us at Coldfire Public House on Saturday, March 14 at 12:30 for lunch and socializing. We'll re-connect, talk about the state of peace in the world (or not), learn about what's new in WCPCA (like this website), and maybe go for a walk along the Willamette. Here is Coldfire's food and beer menus. The grilled cheese is special! 260 Ferry Street, Eugene, OR 97401
How about trading in some February cold and rain (and Superbowl hype) for the warmth and camaraderie of our annual story slam? We all have stories from our Peace Corps experience. Come share, listen, and laugh as we promote a better understanding of other peoples and cultures. Special thanks to Tsunami Books for hosting us. 3:00-4:30. 2585 Willamette St, Eugene, OR 97405
2025
Please join us at Charlie and Juliet's home for our annual summer potluck picnic at 3:30 p.m. Please bring something to share. We'll re-connect, enjoy the tremendous view of W. The 4-mile walk starts on 43rd Street at Spencer Butte Middle School (500 E 43rd Avenue, Eugene, Oregon 97405). Registration required. The walk starts at 8:30 am. Wear a Peace Corps shirt, meet at the flag pole in front of the school, and we'll walk together.
